How Did I Get Here?

Hi, my name is Darius J. Henry. I am 31-year old and as of 2019, I am a writer but I was not always a writer.

So how exactly did I get here?

After I graduated from UCLA as a Political Science major in 2013, I did not know where to go. I had moved back to my mother's house in Lancaster, CA where I applied for jobs. I ended up getting an internship for a law firm. I stayed there for a few months until they let me go. I liked it at first so I ended up taking a Paralegal Training program at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles during the Summer of 2015. Afterward, I moved back to Lancaster where I thought I could find work. Spoiler Alert: I didn't. I spent a year and a half passing out resumes to multiple organizations to no avail.

One day in Spring 2017, I saw this offer so I decided to apply. The company immediately emailed me back and offered me an interview. The original position was supposed to be at Lancaster. However, I did so well in the interview that they wanted me in their main office here in Monterey Park. I thought I finally found my niche and that I was going to go far in the Legal field. My original plan was to work as a Paralegal for the next few years, study to go to Law School and eventually become an attorney.

So what happened?
Let's just say that the plan has changed. I will not explain too much here. I will write a blog on my dissatisfaction with this particular job that I am still working on today. Somewhere between May 2017 to December 2019, I realized that I did not want to be an attorney. But damn, if I don't want to be an attorney, then what is it that I meant to do? That was the question I often asked myself for the past year so I went to a career coach back in January. We did several tests, including Myers-Briggs (I'm an INFJ) and what is my strength and weakness. I will write more about how I discovered my Myers-Brigs.

So after our initial meeting, I looked into a career choice that I want to do. One of those options was writing so I took a Creative Writing course at UCLA Extension in April. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to take more writing courses. As of right now, I have taken a Screenwriting course and a Personal Essay course. I am planning on taking more courses as we go along.

I enjoyed writing so much that I was planning on starting a blog back in May 2019. However, it took me so long because I did not know where to start. I wanted to start before the year, and really the decade, ends so here I am.
